Specific Area Treatments: Center console
The center console is generally hard connected to the firewall and floor thus may transmit a lot of vibration. If it is connected to the nose wheel well, it is likely to be noisier still due to aerodynamic vibration and sharing space with the engine compartment.
This is a rough guide of acoustic treatments for the center console of a typical light aircraft. The actual results may differ from aircraft to aircraft since this by necessity must be a generalization of typical noise path and vibration common to most light aircraft. Some aircraft may be limited by space, clearances, internal volume, and contact with the pilot and passengers that therefore must be taken into account
Level 3 provides basic coverage and Level 1 offers the most insulation.
Acoustic Level 1 Treatment:
- 1. Bond damper to 50-75% of the inside of console.
- 2. Make upholstered blanket to cover console with the following insulation:
- a. 1/8" open cell foam bonded to the upholstery fabric.
- b. 1/8" gummy foam bonded to the open cell foam.
- c. Attach via hook and loop or direct.
Acoustic Level 2 Treatment:
- 1. Bond felt to 50-75% of the inside of console.
- 2. Upholstered console cover over felt.
- 3. OPTIONAL: add layer of closed cell gummy foam to inside for damping.
Acoustic Level 3 Treatment:
- 1. Bone 1/8" closed cell gummy foam to interior.
- 2. Upholster over foam.
