Specific Area Treatments: Rear Bulkhead
The rear bulkhead is not a major contributor to noise but should have some level of treatment to reduce reflected noise and to reduce noise from the rear fuselage from entering.
This is a rough guide of acoustic treatments for the rear bulkhead of a typical light aircraft. The actual results may differ from aircraft to aircraft since this by necessity must be a generalization of typical noise path and vibration common to most light aircraft. Some aircraft may be limited by space, clearances, internal volume, and contact with the pilot and passengers that therefore must be taken into account
Level 3 provides basic coverage and Level 1 offers the most insulation.
Acoustic Level 1 Treatment:
- 1. Cover in 1/4" gummy damping foam bonded against bulkhead.
- 2. Bond 1/4" open cell absorber foam outside damper.
- 3. Upholster over for cosmetics and to protect foam.
- 4. FOR ALUMINUM: Dampers on back of bulkhead.
- 5. Isolate bulkhead from frame with 1/16" –1/8" isolation tape or gummy foam.
Acoustic Level 2 Treatment:
- 1. Cover in 1/4" gummy damping foam bonded against bulkhead.
- 2. Upholster over for cosmetics and to protect foam.
- 3. FOR ALUMINUM: Dampers on back of bulkhead.
- 4. Isolate bulkhead from frame with 1/16" –1/8" isolation tape or gummy foam.
Acoustic Level 3 Treatment:
- 1. Cover in 1/8" or 1/4" gummy damper foam.
- 2. Isolate bulkhead from frame with 1/16" - 1/8" isolation tape or gummy foam.
